“What was it—I paused to think—what was it that so unnerved me in the contemplation of the House of Usher? It was a mystery all insoluble…”

Poe’s classic tale “The Fall of the House of Usher” is sort of the poster child for the chilling, atmosphere driven Gothic tale. It has so many elements of the fantastic, the weird, the gloomy, and the supernatural. What I find so refreshing, interesting and thought-provoking about this story is that you can read it ten different times and find ten different meanings. There is so much going on, both on the surface and symbolically, that you can see something in the story that may have missed on a previous read.

On the barest level, this is simply a tale of an unnamed narrator going to visit and old friend to help him find some solace for an mysterious illness. In the old Gothic tradition, you just know some crazy stuff is going to happen once he gets there. When he gets to the house, as you can imagine, there is a constant sense of foreboding, a gloomy and awful sensation as he sees poor Roderick Usher. (Just wait till you meet Roderick’s sister). Scary and odds things abound, there’s a feeling that we do not know what is real, and what is imagined. How much of the gloom and disparity is feeding into the narrator’s own state of mind? There a story within a story here as well, as some elements drift right into the plot from outside sources.

I don’t think there are many writers who can duplicate Poe’s ability to create and intensify an atmosphere that is deeply disturbing and odd. This story is literally dripping with a heavy, unsettling atmosphere, and it builds and builds. We, much like the narrator, cannot pin down just what the heck is happening here in this house (or, for that matter, in this House).

“The Fall of the House of Usher” is superb, one to read multiple times.

The Fall of the House of Usher Edgar Allan Poe 9781594561795 Books Reviews

When I bought this book, it was meant only for my English class and I thought of getting rid of it after. However, I think I've reconsidered. Poe is a really great author and i enjoyed reading these stories. I love how most of the stories have some sort of connection to every other story and I just like the stories be cause they're an interesting.

I would totally recommend reading this book. Plus, the fact that the edition isn't too expensive is a good thing.

Not giving a five star rating because I don't know if I feel it's the best book in all existence.
This story was told to me first around the campfire as a child and I was not disappointed in the text.

I am sure Poe didnt know how hectic life would be so many years after he wrote this, but a short thrilling story fits well into modern life.

Further his language is refreshing; drawing the reader into the richness that English once was, describing places and people and the events that transpire in such a fashion one can relive the terror of the moment the narrator turns to see the bright light cursing through the fissure of the House of Usher, initiating its destruction entombing the Roddrick siblings forever.
The French is provided after the entirety of the English text, making it completely unhelpful for French language studies. Worse than that, the audiobook that is Whispersynced to it is only in English! My whole reason for purchasing it (to listen to the French, following along, with the English translation nearby) was erroneous. Don't be fooled!
This story is mysterious and breath taking. Told from the perspective of a curious friend. It held my interest as I have been told that I am a descendant of the house of Usher. I am not sure if this is a good thing or if it is true. Good read, I will recommend it to anyone who has an interest in horror.
I had never read much Poe before, but this book gave me the chance to read some of his most celebrated stories and I enjoyed the experience of seeing his use of language even in stories that I didn't particularly care for. This book is a good way for someone to "get their feet wet" with the Master of Horror.
Suspense, dark settings, and mystery are key elements required to keep us at the edge of our seats. Edgar Allen Poe's short story "The Fall of the House of Usher" is based on just that. Growing up, I have always been intrigued by the supernatural and loved reading literature based on the certain subject. Whether it be a fictional story or actual experiences, it would peak my interest. While attending college, a professor of mine recommended that I read this story. For it's time, it was a very controversial story. What's not to love right? Well since it was written such a long time ago, the old English was hard for me to get a grasp of and was quiet difficult to comprehend as to what was unfolding in the story. It was sort of upsetting that I wasn't able to understand and could not decipher this story properly. Luckily, I came across this rewritten version of the book in contemporary English. Now, these authors did an excellent job. The story was rewritten very carefully with the same amount of detail as the original and not once did I feel confused nor have a hard time understanding.

Reading this short story in contemporary English has helped me comprehend as to why this story is such a timeless classic. I want to give my gratitude to the authors for rewriting the entire story in contemporary English, they have done a wonderful job rewriting this classic while keeping the same elements of the original!
This is the correct book I was looking for my English class! All the other editions (that had this picture for the book image) were all wrong and the latest edition. I'm so happy I was finally able to find this book! The book is old, but it is in perfect condition. I had to wait awhile to get it, but it was worth the wait!!! It was delivered on the first date that was estimated. Very happy with my purchase
