When the Synthetic Intelligence, Val Ky Ree wakes from her emergency sleep after a climatic battle, she finds her creator race, The Aesir, are all gone and thousands of years have passed. The last of her kind, she discovers a new purpose in protecting the few thousand humans left in the universe from the hostile alien races called the Compact. As humanity teeters on the edge of extinction, one human male helps her to realize her destiny as she takes on a new role as the last of the mythical Valkyries, who have the power to decide who lives and who dies. She will need all her power and Warrior Code discipline when an old threat from the past re-emerges. This time she must face it alone. Excerpt A double ping brought his attention back to the display. The Compact fleet had just crossed the outer boundary of the sphere. He watched as the side bar data showed her four turrets’ status which shifted from ‘Tracking’ to ‘locked on’. He shifted his gaze back to the yellow dots just in time to see them flash brightly for half a second before becoming very faint dots that were now falling behind the rest of the still advancing fleet. “Targets hit and disabled,” said Val Ky Ree. Before Ronson could say anything, she continued. “Val Ky Ree to Compact Fleet. I have disabled the three Trior ships that are carrying torsion beam weapons. If you board those ships and examine their cargo compartments, you’ll see what’s left of those weapons. I could have destroyed those ships completely, and I can destroy all of your remaining ships just as easily, but I would prefer not to do that. You are being used by the Trior for their own ends. Now that you have seen my power, you are advised to take advantage of my patience and immediately decelerate to zero velocity. If you do not do so, I will take whatever measures are necessary to defend the humans. If all humans are killed, either now or in the future, the race that is responsible for their elimination will face the same fate. This I swear as an Aesir Warrior!” Ronson held his breath as he watched the velocity data of the Compact fleet. It wasn’t slowing down. Another translated text message scrolled across the display. [The decision to destroy all humans was made by the leaders of our races. Your Aesir are gone! By what authority do you interfere in our quest for justice!”] When Val Ky Ree replied, the volume was deafening. “I AM THE LAST OF THE VALKYRIES! THE GODS GAVE US THE POWER TO DECIDE WHO LIVES AND WHO DIES! YOU HAVE DETERMINED YOUR OWN FATE. IN ORDER FOR MY HUMANS TO LIVE, YOU MUST DIE.” Keywords Space Opera, military science fiction, space fleet, galactic empire, war

The Last Valkyrie Dietmar Arthur Wehr Justin Adams Books

I am on Dietmar's mailing list and as soon as I saw the email for his book I bought it. I was expecting it to be part of the Synchronicity series due to the name, and even though it borrows elements from Synchronicity (Trior, for example), it is a separate story and does not involve any characters, plot elements, retro-temporal communications or time travel.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and burned through it in a day. I am a fan of military sci-fi and space opera and I particularly enjoy the underdog story of the humans and their struggle against the Compact. I wish there was more about the world of Gunnir and maybe a bit more history of the Aesir, but I won't knock a star off. The dialog was a bit choppy in only a few places. The way the relationship between Val Ky Ree and Troy was told well, and I would like to know more about them.

For anyone who is a fan of Synchronicity and Retro, this book should be right up your alley.

The Last Valkyrie Dietmar Arthur Wehr Justin Adams Books Reviews

This is a good sci-fi to just escape with. It's not too long, it's got some good science-y bits, has some good action adventure, alien interaction, exploration, etc. Other reviews have discussed that parts aren't delved into or are far too short, and I would agree on some of that. But I also remind myself this is an enjoyable sci-fi and I think that's all its meant to be, so it's ok that it's not a masterpiece.
I took on this book from an promotion. As others have noted, it is mostly "space opera", a bit on the frothy (insubstantial, thinly characterized) side. But for what it attempts to be, The Last Valkyrie seems well enough written. I noticed only a few typos on my way through, and the language mechanics were professional. The plot held only one somewhat serious error of consistency for me, which I won't spoil for other readers by naming. The author is welcome to look me up for my notes if he wants them.
Decent not great story. Story lines fairly predictable with a few surprises. Very much a post apocalyptic story with the human race lucky to survive. The same with several alien races with someone sharing the wealth.

I frankly disagree with the author's idea of a planet killer in that quite a few people should have survived the initial disasters, but that sort of thing is part of any story. I believe folks are a lot tougher than many do. I also think we need to get all our eggs out of one basket. Personal opinion.
I am a Dietmar fan. I bought this book just knowing he wrote it and nothing else. I was not disappointed. He has great plots with lots of twists and turns without a whole lot of fluff. The stuff he can imagine blows my mind. I love artificial intelligence and he does a great job developing a story around that theme. I highly recommend this book.
The Last Valkyrie is an old school space opera and a fast fun read. It has battles against aliens and the last survivors of humanity trying to rebuild with the help of an ancient derelict spacecraft. Dietmar Wehr has created an interesting world that I would like to see more stories in.
For fans of science fiction where the underdog is the human race teetering on the brink of extinction, looking to claw its way back while also holding onto a desire for revenge against an alien race that attempted their extermination, this is an excellent read. It is also maintains a quick pace, with constant interaction with new and interesting entities, or action. However, this may also be at the expense of a more fully developed set of characters, and the universe does not feel as well fleshed out as it could be if this had been a series, or a much longer novel.

Some of the nomenclature, a couple of plot elements, and the title appear to have been inspired by the online fiction story, "The Last Angel" at the Spacebattles Forum given the similarities. The two similarities in plot include humanity having faced an extinction level event, and a sentient, ancient warship providing some form of assistance. That is where these similarities end, however, as the story is completely different, and should be enjoyed by fans of "The Last Angel" as a much faster read.

The ending was a little too abrupt for me, as well as a direction I would not have expected in a science fiction novel, but it did neatly wrap up the entire story nonetheless. This, and the somewhat one-dimensional characters are my only issues, and they are easily overlooked as I thoroughly enjoyed the work. I wish it had been expanded into a longer series of books dealing with the invasion, it's background, and humanity's efforts at rebuilding, but am happy with what I got.
I struggled with number of stars because I could have taken off on for the choppy dialog. There were several scenes where it seemed a conflict was stated and resolved in what seemed 3 utterances. I ended up accepting this because (1) often a ship to control tower dialog was involved and long, emotional venting is not authentic (2) The story would not be advanced by longer dialog (3) With longer dialog, I often have trouble following who is talking and this was NOT a problem here.

On the positive, this is a NOVEL, not a trilogy. With a novel, there is space to build a world, tell a story, and reach a conclusion.

It seemed to me there were some novel scientific elements here. The torsion beam is a new weapon idea I have not seen before. The sentience of the main ship and relationship with human hero were done differently than I have seen before. I think the relationship was well developed. The relativistic battle scenes were well done.

I am not fond of quasi-religious, mystical endings but it as only a few pages.

Unlike many other books where I have to push myself to finish, I zipped through this in 3 days and suddenly realized it had ended. Recommended
