This is, in brief, one of the finest books I've ever read. It belongs on the shelf with Lord of the Flies, Where the Red Fern Grows, Tom Sawyer and other classics. This book should be required reading, not only for it's content, the wonderful, strange and terrifying story, but for how it is put together. There's not a single wrong note, not a wasted word, nothing that doesn't pull you forward to the last page.Very intense, and sad, but with a great ending that turns into some peace for the main character. I can't say enough, this is just a great book. If you're a major reader, as I am, this is one of the books you're always looking for. One that will take over your days, and haunt you when you're done.

It was very interesting and kind of sad. I liked it.
Fantastic storytelling and gut-wrenching emotion. A beautiful story of human failures and frailty, redemption and forgiveness
The Kings of Colorado is a story about a middle aged man's look back at his youth when they sent him to a boy's ranch in Colorado for stabbing his abusive father. This coming of age tale kept me turning the page. It was an excellent read.
I don't think I'm a very good book reviewer, but I do know what I like. This book was hard to put down. It went from one shocking, raw event to another, and I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning reading the denouement.
It's been a long time since I've read a book this well written. Characters, plot, imagery - - all were perfectly crafted. The subject is intense and not at all what I normally read but the book came highly recommended by a friend. Now, I am the one recommending it to everyone I know.
Finally, a literary novel with a compelling plot. Hilton provides an inside view of corruption and tyranny in a boys' reformatory isolated deep in the Colorado Rockies. Some literary critics have compared Kings of Colorado to Lord of the Flies. I have read both novels in the last three months and found Kings of Colorado far superior. Hilton forces the reader to endure the physical and emotional stress of his characters and demonstrates post-traumatic stress syndrome in the making. I have read Pulitzer winning novels that had far less to offer than Kings of Colorado.
Excellent, excellent book. Yes, there is no question that it is a difficult book to read - definitely not a feel-good story. The characters - and Reaper - are so clearly defined that they seem to become a part of you the entire time you are reading it. You are right there with them with every experience, the ones that make you laugh, the ones that make you cry, and the ones that make you angry. These are characters, a horse, and a story that weave their way into you and I know will stay with me for a very long time. I am really glad that I didn't miss this one.
